"Depression is a medical illness, it is also a disease of the mind and spirit as well as the brain. Depression is also treatable, about 50% get better, but there is more research needed. We need to move on, we should be talking about what else we can do - the test for depression is conversation, a low tech but effective diagnosis ...." - Dr. Ira Katz, Geriatrics-Penn U Med. School.
Update: June 16, 2004 "Poor Health - Depression Linked To Elderly Suicides" - Health Day News - In a new Canadian study, increased suicide risk among elderly people is associated with many common illnesses that affect the elderly. The largest increases in suicide risk among these elderly people were from depression, bipolar disorder and severe pain. Other chronic illnesses, often multiple, included seizure disorder, congestive heart failure, and chronic lung disease...
"THE FAITH & WELLNESS CONNECTION"
March 12, 2002 - Updated - Outstanding advances are continuing to be made through research on the correlation between wellness in health and the faith factor in religion and spirituality.
Paul Mills, a UCSD researcher and professor of psychiatry, edited a special issue: 'Religion', Mar. 8, 2002, for the trade Journal: "Annals Of Behavioral Medicine", for the 'Society of Behavioral Medicine.' He initiated the idea after noticing an increasing amount of attention to the subject of the correlation between faith and wellness. "Modern medicine tends to focus on the individual parts and not the whole person," he said. "Too often the parts are not reassembled. Perhaps the reason for the increased attention is that now its time to start putting the parts back together, i.e., the body, mind and spirit."
The results of the studies are notable. Ailing senior citizens who struggle in their beliefs are more at risk to die of their illnesses. Faith filled people are less likely to abuse alcohol and drugs. Heart patients who are prayed for, fare better. In people with HIV and AIDS was found that faith had a great impact on factors such as reducing the amount of stress and their length of survival.
"It's such a fascinating area", Mills said. "Religion has had such a tremendous influence on our culture." In the opening editorial Mills writes, "Every major medical, psychiatric, and behavioral medicine Journal has published on the topic." He doesn't think that logically, being religious automatically makes you a healthier person. Yet, he also believes that there are factors within both personal spirituality and religion that can enhance a person's well-being.
Robert Kaplan, who chairs the Dept. of Family and Preventative Medicine at UCSD Medical School, is the journal's editor-in-chief. Likewise, he says that he does see some correlation between wellness and the faith factor in religion and spirituality. He hopes that as interest builds, the research will get better.
In The "Annals Of Behavioral Medicine", was written that nearly 30 medical schools in the U. S. A. now include courses on religion, spirituality and health. In the year 2000 more than 250 articles were published on the possible correlation.
Mills suggests that, "Medicine will seek a balance that incorporates both patients' faith as well as their psychology." He asks, "How far will that go? I'll leave that up to them, but at least address it."
Matthew 6:33; 11:24; 17:20; Luke 7:50
But seek you first the Kingdom of GOD, and His Righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you.
Therefore I Say to you, What things soever you desire, when you pray,
believe that you receive them, and you shall have them.
... For Truthfully I Say to you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed,
you shall say to this mountain, Remove to that place; and it shall remove;
and nothing shall be impossible to you.
And He Said to the woman, Your faith has Saved you, go in peace.
Of course, with impregnable faith comes Salvation.
Romans 5:2; Matthew 8:13
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with GOD through our LORD Jesus Christ:
by Whom we have access by faith into this Grace wherein we stand,
and rejoice in hope of the Glory of GOD.
And Jesus Said to the centurion, Go your way, as you have believed, so shall it be done to you.
"Individuals & Nations"
What works for individuals works for nations, as well.
And the nations of them which are Saved shall walk in the Light of it; ...
In all nations, we find ourselves in the year 2002, in a sorry state of affairs, being at war, needing to form a coalition to defend against the ominous terror; that terror also being in another form that was already present among so many of us.
Injustices and crimes against humanity exist in so many of our professed peace loving, civilized nations, that include cruel abortions of the helpless-innocent, persecutions due to race and religion, harbored grudges, rivalries, revenge and resentments that perpetrate unspeakable violence; exploitation of women and children, debased morality that ruins the future lives of our children; are these not equally terrorism?
I don't make excuse for any terrorists, or anything about them, but Righteousness and Truth in religions and faith warn us that what we sow, so shall we reap.
As to abortion, the medical findings are in: "ASTONISHING.MEDICAL FINDINGS", so that the former erroneous and misleading information is no longer valid. Yet, where is the sanely expedited and compassionate response to this among a 'civilized' people?
"Waged On All Fronts"
It's time for the nations, all to address these serious problems for the sake of all of humanity and its future. When we eradicate evil by our own causation, we strike a strong blow to evil in any form.
Understandably, it is difficult for government leaders to control all factions of evil in their countries, but we must find the courage to expeditiously try do so, in this precarious, uncertain time.
The 'war on terror' is to be waged on all fronts if we are to succeed.
I am praying for us all.
With love and hope,
Pastor Gerry M. Kaye.
